| | Description | The goal for this book is to give you an easy-to-read, condensed, yet comprehensive case for the freedom to use drugs that are only part way through the long FDA approval process. After reading this book, you will have a working knowledge of the FDA drug approval process, a clear understanding of the enormous benefits a Free To Choose Medicine Act would bring, and the ability to see through the false arguments of those who want ever-more-stringent FDA testing that, in reality, amounts to deadly overcaution. My hope is that you will then become an enthusiastic supporter of a reform movement to enact legislation that enables patients, advised by their doctors, to make informed decisions about the use of not-yet-FDA-approved therapeutic drugs. | |

read this if you think you'll ever get sick Aug 07, 2010
By Marie There was a time when doctors and patients got to decide. Now--not. Now, it's the FDA and their "one rule fits everyone." Which turns out doesn't work so well. Especially for patients who cannot wait ten years for some new drug to be approved by them. After describing the reality of this, author Madden brings to the issue of improving health care his experience from the business world. He makes us aware that getting drugs to patients via the FDA, or any other way, is actually a system; and he applies the systems mindset to our health care dilemma. Then he forewarns us of how the FDA has typically responded to any perceived threat to their monopolistic power. Then he proposes a simple, yet powerful plan that lets us be able to decide for ourselves which, to repeat, we now cannot do. That is, the option to put decision-making back where it belongs--in the hands of doctors and their patients. Madden reveals how the seed of that idea is already somewhat at work and is successful. After presenting his sound plan, he concludes with a detailed call for grass roots participation and asks that the public and health care professionals raise a demand for government to enact law on the public's behalf. Even a former director at the FDA likes Madden's proposal. Also a Nobel Laureate, a U.S. Senator, and several health care non-profit foundations. If enacted, a Free To Choose Medicine Act would, over time, fundamentally restructure both the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA, updating them to match contemporary needs and the speed of medical innovations, and thus bring life-improving and life-saving benefits to millions of people worldwide. So, either don't ever get sick, or read this short, concise book that shows how a Free To Choose MedicineAct could save your life or that of a family member.

Break the FDA monopoly on testing Aug 05, 2010
By Bruno Behrend This is one of the more important books on the topic of FDA reform. It highlights the need for an improved drug approval program that gives Americans access to better drugs, faster, and at a lower cost.
This book explains why it takes so long to bring new drugs to market, and offers intelligent and doable alternatives to the existing system.
Key insights of this book are that;
* The FDA is the bottleneck in the drug delivery system, unnecessarily slowing down the process of drug approval.
* This bottleneck is causing the unneeded pain, suffering, and even premature death of citizens who deserve to be able to get access to drug that may help them.
* That FDA can test for safety without testing for "efficacy."
* That allowing citizens, under the care of their physician, access drugs that have completed the FDA's first round of trials, will create a faster approval process and better testing regime.
* There is a superior system for tracking reactions and effects of a new drug than the current and cumbersome FDA trial process.
This book matters to YOU! You may someday be in need of a drug that has been developed specifically to address some future ailment. You may be denied access to that drug, despite your willingness to try it knowing of all potential risks. There are better ways to approve drugs than the current system, and 'Free to Choose Medicine explains why, and offers an excellent alternative system.

Who can argue with greater freedom to choose our own health care? Aug 07, 2010
By jo The basic concept that Madden presents should resonate with all who read it -- that people should have the right (i.e. the freedom) to decide for themselves when facing alternative health care options. Roadblocks to new ideas typically come from entrenchedspecial interests, such as the FDA, that seek to protect their turf regardless of how well they serve the public's needs. Recognizing these challenges, Madden presents an alternative that leaves all the existing options intact, but at the same time allows the development of new alternatives -- and choices.

Healthy Reading Aug 23, 2010
By Sloane Frost Mr. Madden's book is an excellent look into what life would be like without such a Draconian pharmaceutical review process. Dual Tracking is an innovative step towards a competitive market for life-saving treatments as well as a critical way for patients to regain control of their own lives. His ideas are clearly presented, well cited, thoroughly analyzed, and force the reader to reconsider what has become one of government's most dogmatic (and perhaps overrated) roles. This book is refreshing in its creativity and use of logic. Free to Choose Medicine should be required reading for every American - health policy students, FDA personnel, and John Q. Public alike.
