Angered by years of excessive government spending-taxpayer financed bailouts of businesses deemed too big to fail and taxpayer handouts to special interest groups-Americans of all ages and all walks of life took to the streets to take back their country. A New American Tea Party: The Counterrevolution Against Bailouts, Handouts, Reckless Spending, and More Taxes is their story, and it's your guide for contributing to the movement to rein in government spending. The book
- Summarizes the Tea Party movement
- Explains how the Tea Party protests were organized
- Presents a call to action for continuing protests and describes how to best coordinate them
The debt resulting from today's reckless government spending will eventually result in massive tax hikes. A New American Tea Party shows how to focus your outrage into a productive movement that will make a positive difference. | |

Behind the scenes insights on Tea Parties Jan 21, 2010
By Dr B Leland Baker Ch 1: The Tea Parties - Discusses behind the scenes events that resulted in the large tea party protests on April 15th 2009. Ch 2: How We Got Here Abandoning Principles and the People - Discusses lessons from Ronald Reagan, disappointments of Bush, the 1994 Almost-Revolution, and disappointments of the George W. Bush Big-Government administration, and the 2008 election of Obama. Ch 3: The Whistling Teapot, The Financial Crisis, and the Bailout Nation - Discusses Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSE) as well as bailouts and corporate welfare. Ch 4: The Political Class Reacts - Identifies ignorance of the political class and the misguided attempts of DHS to tag "Right Wing Extremism" as anti-government behavior that could include tea partiers. It also covers out-of-touch Nancy Pelosi references to an astro-turf movement. Ch 5: The Media Strikes Back - Interesting observations of the Media Blackout followed by misinformation and sexual slurs (e.g. Rachel Maddow, Anderson Cooper, and Keith Olbermann shows); reviews the absurdly racist accusations of Janeane Garofalo as well. Ch 6: Radical Ideas: fiscal responsibility, individual liberty versus stimulus fraud and mythical job numbers - concludes with violations of the Constitution Ch 7: Radical Tactics - Discussion on Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals, ACORN, Unions, SEIU, and a culture of corruption. Correctly identifies that Tea Partiers are against bailouts and handouts. Ch 8: The Teapot Boils over Healthcare, Takes Center Stage - Discusses town hall reactions to a "fishy" plan supported by White House Spin. Ch 9: The Tea Party Manifesto - Emphasis on fiscal responsibility and limited government Ch 10: Rules for Counter-radicals ... Asks why should we reward bad behavior. He places emphasis on roles of government as well as consistent principled action.
I give this book my highest rating of five stars. John O'Hara has a wonderfully entertaining writing style that is very easy to read and understand. Incumbent politicians and those who aspire to elected offices should read this book to understand the "common men and women" who make up the Tea Party movement. It is a terrific primer in current events. John, I am proud of you for telling it like it is! Great Job!

Real Americans with real concerns Apr 22, 2010
By L. McCann
"ljmccann"
It's disheartening to see that some reviewers cannot think beyond the paradigm of Republican vs. Democrat, right vs. left. This book accurately chronicles the generic and humble beginnings of the tea party movement demonstrating once and for all the supposed Astroturf ringleaders are real Americans with real concerns who finally came together to confront the gross expansions of government. This isn't about party politics. This isn't a front, a show, or some GOP or Fox conspiracy. As A New American Tea Party demonstrates, this tea party movement is about the philosophical underpinnings of freedom and the role of government and the participants are diverse and amorphous. The tea party attendees, and readers and reviewers, know that government growth didn't happen overnight. There was a departure from limited government when Republicans were in control that continued on through the beginning of the Obama Administration. The anger from the tea party movement is directed at both parties who have an equal hand in our current mess. John O'Hara thoughtfully explores the multitude of policy debates that triggered lighting fast and organic activism from people who had never participated in the political process or attended a rally. These newfound activists came together and voiced concerns in a variety of areas but held the common belief that one must protest the excessive government expansion into our lives or risk our most treasured and basic liberties. A perfect storm of events. This book helps paint a clear picture of the contributing factors that led to this surprising revolution of the masses. Don't dismiss the book because you don't agree with the philosophical beliefs shared by the movement. Look past your own political leanings and try to understand how the empowered tea party activists will affect the political process moving forward. How can both parties relate to the growing sentiment of the tea party activists as we head into the next election cycle with "tea party" candidates running in primary races against "party" leaders? The book is the first real opportunity to study the beginnings of the movement and understand their broad concerns.

Good background information and history Aug 16, 2010
By Kilo This book provided me with good background information on how the Tea Party took off. I was a little late in reading it but finally got to it. It is truly inspiring to know that the an organic movement could start in five days without no leadership or plans. This only solidifies the passion and compelling movement from real grassroots. There is also some real good history of how the unions control political agendas and how they treat the employers. It really filled in a lot of gaps a had in my research due to the overwhelming amount of damage being thrown at the American public on daily.
I read some of the low rate reviewers and again am disgusted by their desperate attempts to dismiss the movement. It was ironic that the book actually describes exactly what the lefties are doing here on Amazon and every other outlet. This is scary but it reminds me of the bibles teachings of demons, or for movie buffs when the sunlight hits the vampires.
Keep moving forward American so we can finally cement down the lid on these real hate-mongers that have gotten their way for too long!!
(This is a Review I Wrote for the UK) Read This and Understand How a Certain Section of America Thinks Apr 18, 2012
By Ronald Stuart If you are interested to know how a certain section of America thinks and feels about the U.S. government's growing economic size and borrowing and its reaction to the economic troubles, I think this is an effective and informative guide.
It struck me throughout this book, as a non American reader, that there is something typically American about this Tea Party movement. I would not like to count the times phrases like: individual liberty, self reliance, American constitution, founding fathers, were used. Also at times it was possible to perceive this book as representing the more reasonable and moderate face or tip of a movement which encompasses a larger underwater iceberg made up partly of more extreme controversial opinion and strong feeling.
However one part of the book I especially liked was when it was critical of the governments role in encouraging the housing bubble and sub-prime lending. I get their arguments here, they are convincing. The U.S. government mistakenly sought to increase home ownership through tax breaks and through giving targets to institutions like Fanny and Freddie, and also it kept interest rates very low. I agree with the self reliance free market critique on this issue, that artificially encouraging people into home ownership that do not have the appropriate incomes is economic naivety at its worst. It took government encouragement and government guarantees to enable and encourage the excesses of private greed and unwise private mortgage decisions. Pointing out this kind of unwise economic interference in the past is the strongest part of the book and the movement.
But does the Tea Party and the return to founding father principles hold the answers to America's future reinvigoration? That depends on your political point of view, and mine is that even once government "gets out of the way" then the average American worker may find that individual liberty leads to individuals choosing to buy more goods and services from abroad, and that the comparative advantages the country's workers had and has are declining. Reducing American's tax burden by say ten percent of their national income is a small gain against a skilled and capitalised Chinese or Indian worker earning less than a fifth of an American's wages. The Tea Party's approach could reverse the country's debt situation, but I did not see any grappling with the underlying trade and unemployment issues in this book.
A VERY USEFUL PORTRAIT OF THE TEA PARTY MOVEMENT Apr 03, 2012
By Steven H. Propp John O'Hara works for the Illinois Policy Institute, and previously worked at The Heartland Institute. He wrote in the Preface to this 2010 book, "'A New American Tea Party' chronicles how the tea party movement came to be and its place in the growing tension between competing visions of the roles of the individual and the state in American society... My hope is that this book will... set the historic record straight on what is a critically important grassroots movement... serve to define and articulate the principles of that movement... (and) will help to fortify, inspire, and guide fellow counter-revolutionaries in the policy battles ahead."
The book begins with "Bailout Nation: A Spending Timeline," which details all of the loans, bailouts, collapses, bankrupticies, and other key events in the fiscal crisis of 2008-2010.
He notes that although President Obama denounced plans to reinstate the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" (which mandated "equal time" on TV and radio), "he doesn't hide his hatred of criticism from the media." (Pg. 121) While observing that there is still "considerable debate among conservatives and libertarians" about Medicare Part D, he admits that "the truly competitive Medicare Part D has resulted in premiums that are 40 percent lower than projected in 2004 and a satifaction rate of 87 percent among beneficiaries." (Pg. 180)
He points out that criticisms of Tea Party from individuals such as Sen. Barbara Boxer as being "Astroturf" (i.e., fake grassroots activism), and composed of "wealthy or well financed" individuals, "neither of which are true," is "a fallacy of logic." (Pg. 194) Tea Party supporters "ran the gamut of the political and socio-economic spectrum," including corporate leaders and small business owners; stay-at-home moms, traders, electricians, tradesmen, real estate brokers, and veterans. (Pg. 206)
He makes that point the Tea Party members are not about redistributing wealth, or taking on corporate leaders; "What angers people is when their hard-earned tax dollars are used to cushion the fall of irresponsible corporate decisions." (Pg. 211) He concludes on the note, "This revived enthusiasm for taking an interest in policy that affects our lives ... must continue so that we may pass those reins on to future generations for the inevitable policy battles to come." (Pg. 259)
This is a very insightful look into the ideas and actions that constitute the Tea Party movement.
